A Birmingham-based accountant has been given a two year jail sentence for altering his clients’ tax returns and lying about his own financial affairs to make fraudulent claims that totalled £186,000.
He altered his clients’ documents in order to claim refunds of £140,000. When a client questioned the accounts he paid back some of the cash to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and explained it had been a mistake. A few months later, he committed another fraud by sending fake self-assessment tax returns to HMRC. He also lied about his business being in trouble, and claimed refunds of £46,000.
This demonstrates the serious penalties that can be awarded for altering tax returns and lying about financial affairs.
