06.04.17 Deliveroo’s “six-page” update to false self-employment

06 April 2017

The gig-economy has been in the spotlight again this week with regard to a six-page document which was given to managers at Deliveroo. The document consists of a lengthy “dos and don’ts” list which must be adhered to when discussing the company’s food delivery couriers.

The list contains carefully worded examples of phrases Deliveroo employees should use when discussing the self-employed couriers, for example describing the couriers as “independent suppliers” rather than workers. The document appears to be a half-hearted attempt from Deliveroo to deter claims from the couriers that they are in fact employees or workers and therefore entitled to more employment rights such as holiday pay and sick pay.

Other examples from the document include referring to couriers pay statements as via invoices rather than payslips, discussing their company branded clothing as “kit” or “equipment” and when discussing their work, it should be referred to as “orders” rather than “shifts”.

There have been multiple cases which have brought the gig economy into the headlines in recent months, including that of CitySprint, Uber and Hermes demonstrating a ‘domino effect’ in this area of employment status disputes. With the Taylor review into employment practices and modern business models well underway, with a report of findings expected in summer, we don’t believe the spotlight will deter from false self-employment anytime soon.

If you are concerned about your engagement of self-employed workers, feel free to give one of the Aspire team a call to discuss how we can help you.
