On the fourth day of Christmas, Aspire informed me…of the importance of a discrimination policy!

10 December 2019

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Had a very shiny nose
And if you ever saw it
You would even say it glows

All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names
They never let poor Rudolph
Join in any reindeer games

Discrimination means treating an individual unfairly because of who they are. The Equality Act 2010 protects individuals from discrimination from employers, businesses and public bodies like government departments and local authorities.

There are nine characteristics which are protected by the Equality Act 2010 including gender, age, race, and sexual orientation to name a few. If you or an employee feels they have been discriminated against, you can:

  • complain directly to the person or organisation
  • use someone else to help you sort it out (‘mediation’ or ‘alternative dispute resolution’)
  • make a claim in a court or tribunal

How Rude-olph them!
