Self-assessment: Bulk appeals and payment plan deadline

23 March 2021

Agents and accountants can submit bulk late filing appeals on behalf of their clients:

Agents will be able to complete a bulk appeal form for late filing penalties for up to 25 clients, however, this service will only be available for individuals and businesses who could not file their self-assessment tax return due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new process will be available from 24 March and will be available for six months.

The Self-Assessment payment plan deadline is coming up:

  • Self-assessment taxpayers have just over a week to set up an online payment plan to settle pay liabilities for the 2019-20 financial year.
  • Those with outstanding tax liabilities can still settle outstanding liabilities in full with no penalty as long as it is paid by the 1 April.
  • HMRC has given self-assessment taxpayers more time to pay their taxes for the 2019-20 year confirming that these taxpayers would not be charged a 5% penalty as long as outstanding taxes were paid, or a payment plan was put in place, by the 1 April 2020
  • Those who wish to set up a payment plan can do so on the Government website

It is important that all self-assessment taxpayers comply with the deadline of 1 April 12021 in order to avoid facing any penalties. This extension has been helpful to many taxpayers who have struggled to submit their assessment on time due to the pandemic.

HMRC have said that ‘Almost 117,000 taxpayers have set up a self-serve Time to Pay arrangement online, totalling more than £437 million.’
